Basics of Ice Hockey

California-based Darin Pastor is the founder and CEO of Capstone Affluent Strategies, an exclusive independent wealth management company. Under the leadership of Darin Pastor in 2013, the firm made an offer to the National Hockey League to buy the Phoenix Coyotes, an ice hockey team located in Glendale, Arizona.

Below are some of the basics of ice hockey:

1. The ice surface, known as the rink, is divided into three zones: the defending zone near the goal net; the neutral zone in the middle of the rink between the two blue lines; and the attacking zone or offensive zone near the goal net of the opponent team. A red line divides the rink into two halves. The team that scores more goals by inserting the puck into the opponent’s net by the end of the game is the winner.

2. Each team has six team members consisting of one goaltender, who is responsible for protecting the goals, with the remaining five skaters split among three forward players and two defenders. Except for the goaltender, all players can go anywhere.

3. The game is divided into three periods, depending on the age of the players. Beginning or resuming the game is marked by a referee dropping the puck in between opposing forwards facing each other.

4. During the game, when the opponent has the puck under his or her control, the player can touch to check the opponent using his or her shoulder, hip, or chest. However, a body check to the head or to the back when the opponent is facing the boards is not allowed.

5. Tripping, holding, hooking, and other ways of obstructing the opposing players will result in minor penalties. Checking a player without a puck will also count as a minor penalty offense. Fighting in the rink, pushing another player and causing him or her to hit the walls of the rink, and swinging a hockey stick at another player will result in a major penalty. Minor penalties last for two minutes, while major penalties last for five minutes.
